This Saturday in Olympia there’s a street rally against public service cuts here and in Wisconsin, bless their cottage cheese hearts. This is most heartening. Vashon’s Roger Fulton is calling all cars. And, Moi? As usual I am firmly in armchair looking for what’s wrong in the big picture. Aha, our Community Council is too busy sweeping K2 fallout under the rug to join in. Formally, its current agenda only lists changing a County Unincorporated Area agreement, K2 being present only where noted. The buzz Councilwise is about something we are calling governance. Loosely put “governance” is pent up boredom with the monthly grind through minutes, motions, and standing committee reports. More accurately it is a search for the reason that each of the nine Council board seats seems to give the incumbent a hot foot: a mass resignation last fall has been followed by a non-election and several resignations. Specifically, it is the design of a Council structure that will give some voice to the people who now shun it. Ignoring...

January 19, 2011 Dear Community Council board representatives: Although sitting on the VMICC board is clearly not a constructive opportunity for me at this time, I feel responsible to the people who voted for me to listen, learn about the issues and try to participate in service to the Island. Upon reflecting on Monday night’s meeting, I want to share my perspective on three items: · John Runyan’s comments: Over the last months, I, too, have observed right many VMICC members offer comments, insights, questions, concerns, suggestions which beg for acknowledgment, at the least, and invite continuing conversation, sometimes even action. These often carefully prepared and sometimes heartfelt attempts to communicate with you and other Island citizens via the public forum seem to go into a vacuum (which sometimes feels hostile). Then they completely disappear; I don’t believe they are even reflected in minutes. This is particularly perplexing when the questions raised repeatedly concern governance, meeting format and...
